FC Porto began the defence of their Liga Portugal title with three points after defeating FC Alverca 2,0 at the Estádio do Dragão on Sunday.
André Silva and Gabri Veiga scored the goals as the defending champions successfully negotiated their first league assignment of the 2026/27 campaign.
The victory puts Francesco Farioli’s side among the early winners of the opening round and provides Porto with the start they wanted as they begin another campaign carrying the expectations of defending the Portuguese championship.

Two penalties put Porto in control
The decisive moments arrived during the first half, with André Silva playing a central role in both Porto goals.
The Portuguese forward won the first penalty after an incident that was reviewed by referee Luís Godinho at the VAR monitor. Silva then assumed responsibility himself and converted from the spot to give the hosts the lead.
Porto were awarded another penalty before the interval after André Silva was pulled by Hamed Junior Touaizi inside the area. Once again, the referee changed his original decision following a VAR review.
This time Gabri Veiga stepped forward and converted the penalty, doubling Porto’s advantage and sending the defending champions into half-time with a 2,0 lead.
Alverca refuse to disappear
Despite the two-goal deficit, Alverca continued to compete and attempted to find a route back into the contest after the interval.
The visitors produced moments that required the attention of Diogo Costa, preventing Porto from treating the second half simply as a formality.
The Portuguese international goalkeeper responded when required and preserved the clean sheet, while Porto controlled enough of the remaining contest to protect their advantage.
There would be no third goal, but there would also be no Alverca comeback.
André Silva makes immediate impact
André Silva emerged as one of the central figures of Porto’s opening league victory.
His influence extended beyond converting the opening penalty. The striker was directly involved in winning both spot kicks and immediately made his presence felt in his first Liga Portugal appearance of the new campaign.
For Porto, his contribution provided another attacking reference as the champions begin the long process of defending their title.
Gabri Veiga also started the league season on the scoresheet, converting the second penalty and helping establish the advantage Porto carried into the interval.
Farioli starts with three points
The performance was not always spectacular, but the result was exactly what Porto required.
At this stage of the season, rhythm and sharpness are still developing. Farioli acknowledged after the match that producing consistently brilliant football is difficult so early in the campaign.
What mattered most on Sunday was avoiding an opening-day complication.
Porto did that.
The champions scored twice, kept a clean sheet and collected three points in front of their supporters at the Dragão.
For Alverca, the final score does not entirely reflect a performance in which the visitors remained competitive and forced Diogo Costa into action. Their return from Porto comes without points, but with evidence that they can create problems at this level.
