By Open Chronicle Sports
CD Nacional secured their first victory of the 2026/27 Liga Portugal season with a 2,0 win over Estoril Praia at the Estádio da Madeira, extending their unbeaten start to the new campaign and moving onto four points from their opening two matches.
After beginning the season with a 2,2 draw away to Santa Clara, Nacional returned to Madeira needing to turn an encouraging opening performance into a victory.
They did exactly that.
A disciplined home display, two goals and a first clean sheet of the campaign gave Nacional three points and provided another encouraging sign in the opening weeks of the new season.
Léo Santos scored the second goal, putting the contest beyond Estoril and helping Nacional complete a significant early season victory.

Nacional Build on Their Opening Point
Nacional entered Matchday 2 with reasons for optimism.
Their opening fixture had produced a 2,2 draw against Santa Clara in the Azores, giving the Madeiran club an immediate point and demonstrating that they were capable of competing in an open contest away from home.
But a strong start to a season requires more than encouraging performances.
It requires victories.
Against Estoril, Nacional found one.
The home side produced a more controlled performance than they had managed in Ponta Delgada. Instead of another four goal exchange, Nacional established an advantage and successfully protected it.
The result provides an early indication that the team can win matches in different ways.
A First Home Victory
Playing at the Estádio da Madeira offered Nacional an opportunity to establish their home ground as an important source of points.
They took it.
Estoril arrived having opened their own season with a 1,1 draw against Famalicão, meaning both clubs were looking for their first victory of 2026/27.
Nacional ultimately proved more effective.
Once the home side established the advantage, Estoril were required to chase the game and take greater risks.
Nacional resisted.
Then came the goal that effectively settled the afternoon.
Léo Santos Makes Sure
Léo Santos provided the decisive second goal.
At 1,0, Estoril remained within a single moment of changing the contest.
At 2,0, the situation became considerably more difficult.
For Nacional, the second goal offered both security and confirmation that the afternoon was moving firmly in their direction.
It also underlined the value of receiving goals from different areas of the team.
Léo Santos has previously demonstrated an ability to contribute offensively. The defender also scored during Nacional’s 4,0 victory over Rio Ave in January 2026.
Against Estoril, he was on the scoresheet again.
This time his contribution helped secure Nacional’s first victory of the new championship.
The Clean Sheet Matters
The two goals will naturally receive attention, but the zero at the other end may be equally significant.
Nacional conceded twice against Santa Clara on the opening weekend.
Against Estoril, they conceded none.
That represents an immediate defensive improvement and provides the team with another building block for the weeks ahead.
Successful Liga Portugal campaigns are rarely constructed entirely through spectacular attacking performances. The ability to protect leads, manage difficult periods and collect clean sheets can be just as important.
Nacional demonstrated all three against Estoril.
Four Points from Six
The early season numbers now make encouraging reading for the Madeiran club.
CD Nacional after Matchday 2
| Statistic | Record |
|---|---|
| Played | 2 |
| Won | 1 |
| Drawn | 1 |
| Lost | 0 |
| Goals For | 4 |
| Goals Against | 2 |
| Goal Difference | +2 |
| Points | 4 |
Nacional have collected four of the first six points available.
More importantly, they remain unbeaten.
There is far too much football still to be played for two matches to define the direction of a season, but strong starts create breathing space and confidence.
Nacional have achieved both.
A Different Story for Estoril
Estoril leave Madeira with a considerably different early season picture.
Their opening 1,1 draw against Famalicão provided a point, but defeat against Nacional means the Canarinhos remain without a victory after two rounds.

| Statistic | Record |
|---|---|
| Played | 2 |
| Won | 0 |
| Drawn | 1 |
| Lost | 1 |
| Goals For | 1 |
| Goals Against | 3 |
| Goal Difference | minus 2 |
| Points | 1 |
Two matches represent only a small sample, but Estoril’s immediate challenge is clear.
They need to rediscover an attacking threat and convert competitive periods into points.
Nacional prevented them from doing either in Madeira.
Revenge at the Estádio da Madeira
There was also some recent history behind Sunday’s result.
When Estoril last visited the Estádio da Madeira in Liga Portugal, on 15 March 2026, the Canarinhos left Funchal with a 1,0 victory.
Felix Bacher scored the decisive goal on that occasion.
Five months later, the outcome was reversed.
15 March 2026
CD Nacional 0,1 Estoril Praia
16 August 2026
CD Nacional 2,0 Estoril Praia
For Nacional, therefore, this was more than simply their first victory of the new campaign.
It was also an emphatic response to their previous home defeat against the same opponent.
A Promising Beginning
The significance of the victory becomes clearer when placed alongside Nacional’s opening result.
Matchday 1
Santa Clara 2,2 CD Nacional
Matchday 2
CD Nacional 2,0 Estoril Praia
Four goals scored.
Two conceded.
Four points collected.
No defeats.
One clean sheet.
The first two rounds have therefore given Nacional a solid platform from which to approach the next stage of the championship.
They have already demonstrated resilience away from home and control at the Estádio da Madeira.
Match Notes
First Win
Nacional record their first Liga Portugal victory of the 2026/27 campaign.
Unbeaten
The Madeiran club have four points from their opening two fixtures.
First Clean Sheet
After conceding twice against Santa Clara, Nacional keep Estoril scoreless.
Home Response
Nacional reverse the result of Estoril’s previous Liga Portugal visit to the Estádio da Madeira.
Léo Santos
The defender scores Nacional’s second goal and again demonstrates his ability to contribute offensively.
Four Goals
Nacional have already scored four times in their opening two league fixtures.
Matchday 2 Takes Shape
The victory also places Nacional among the stronger early starters in Liga Portugal.
After Sunday’s results, FC Arouca, FC Porto and Marítimo have six points from six, while Nacional move into the group immediately behind them with four points.
Sporting CP and Santa Clara have also collected four.
The standings remain extremely compressed and will change considerably as the campaign develops, but Nacional have already achieved one important objective.
They have avoided spending the opening weeks chasing the rest of the league.
Instead, they are part of the early leading group.
What Comes Next
The challenge now is continuity.
Four points from two matches represent an excellent platform, but the opening weeks of a season can change rapidly.
Nacional will want to carry the confidence generated by their first victory into Matchday 3, particularly after demonstrating that they can combine attacking efficiency with defensive solidity.
Estoril face a different task.
One point from six is not a crisis, but finding a first victory will quickly become the priority as the Canarinhos attempt to establish their own early season momentum.
Open Chronicle Verdict
Nacional turned promise into points.
The 2,2 draw in the Azores had shown that the Madeiran side could compete.
The victory over Estoril demonstrated something more important.
They can finish the job.
Two goals delivered the result. Léo Santos helped make it safe. A clean sheet ensured Estoril never found a route back.
After two rounds, Nacional have four points, four goals and an unbeaten record.
For a team still establishing the character of its 2026/27 campaign, that represents a highly encouraging beginning.
