LOS ANGELES โ Hollywood is reeling from a tragedy in the Brentwood neighborhood, where acclaimed director-actor Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found dead in their home on Sunday afternoon in what police are investigating as an apparent homicide.
In a shocking development that sent further shockwaves through the community, the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested and booked for murder in connection with the killings, according to Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell.
Son Booked for Murder, Held on $4 Million Bail
Los Angeles Police Department officials confirmed that Nick Reiner was taken into custody on Sunday night. He is being held on a $4 million bail, according to online jail records. While the LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division initially provided few details, Chief McDonnell confirmed Monday that Nick Reiner was “booked for murder” in connection with the deaths.
Authorities believe the couple suffered stab wounds, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Emergency services, responding to a medical aid request shortly after 3:30 p.m. Sunday, discovered the man and woman dead inside the residence. Police confirmed there were no signs of forced entry. Multiple sources indicated that the couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner, was the one who discovered her parents and called authorities.
A Troubled Past and a Father’s Love
Nick Reiner’s arrest brings renewed attention to his long-documented struggles with drug addiction and mental health issues. He has spoken publicly about cycling in and out of rehab facilities since his adolescence, and has experienced periods of homelessness.
His painful relationship with his parents and his battle with substance abuse served as the basis for the 2015 semi-autobiographical film, Being Charlie, which he co-wrote and his father, Rob Reiner, directed. Rob Reiner had spoken openly about the emotional toll his son’s struggles took on the family, but expressed hope that collaborating on the film had brought them closer.
Family friends also reported that Rob and Nick Reiner had a heated argument on Saturday night at a party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, where Nick Reiner reportedly “acted strangely.”
Tributes Pour in for a Hollywood Legend
The deaths mark a devastating loss for Hollywood. Rob Reiner, the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, rose to fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic in the iconic 1970s TV show All in the Family. He went on to become one of Hollywood’s most celebrated directors, helming classics like When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, and A Few Good Men.
Tributes immediately poured in from political and entertainment figures alike:
“Rob Reinerโs contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society,” stated Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. “He has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice.”
The family of the late producer Norman Lear, who considered Reiner a son, released a statement saying they were “heartbroken” and that Reiner and his wife “spent every breath trying to make this country a better place.”
As the Robbery Homicide Division continues its investigation into the shocking apparent homicide in the normally quiet Brentwood neighborhood, the Reiner family has requested privacy during this “unbelievably difficult time.” It was not immediately clear if Nick Reiner has retained an attorney.
