WASHINGTON / DAVOS – In a move that has rewritten the rules of traditional diplomacy, President Donald Trump has made public private communications from French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The leak, shared via screenshots on Truth Social, centers on the administration’s intensifying push to acquire Greenland.

The disclosure comes just as world leaders gather for the World Economic Forum in Davos, where the “Greenland Question” has become the primary source of friction between the U.S. and its European allies.

Macron’s Confusion and an Invitation to Paris

The message from President Macron, which the Élysée Palace has since confirmed as authentic, reflects a mix of diplomatic cooperation and deep confusion over the U.S. stance on the Arctic.

“My friend, we are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran,” Macron’s text reportedly read. “I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland.”

Macron’s message also included an invitation for Trump to attend a G7 meeting in Paris this Thursday, floating the idea of inviting leaders from Ukraine, Denmark, Syria, and Russia to the margins of the summit. The French leader concluded with a dinner invitation before Trump’s scheduled return to the U.S.

NATO’s Search for a “Way Forward”

The President also shared a message from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, following a telephone call on Sunday. In the text, Rutte praised Trump’s recent actions in Syria as “incredible” and expressed a commitment to finding a “way forward” regarding Greenland’s status.

Trump’s decision to publish these messages appears intended to demonstrate that European leaders are engaging with his proposal in private, despite their vocal public opposition. “As I expressed to everyone, very plainly, Greenland is imperative for National and World Security,” Trump posted. “There can be no going back—On that, everyone agrees!”

Economic Threats and “Board of Peace”

The leaks were accompanied by a renewed threat against France. Frustrated by Macron’s reported refusal to join a U.S.-backed “Board of Peace” for Gaza, Trump threatened to impose a 200% tariff on French wine and champagne. “Nobody wants him because he’s going to be out of office very soon,” Trump remarked of the French President, adding that the tariffs would remain until France joined the peace initiative.

As Trump prepares to arrive in Davos on Wednesday, the leak of private diplomatic correspondence has left European capitals reeling. EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas is expected to address the European Parliament later today, as the bloc weighs a coordinated response to what many describe as “intimidation diplomacy.”
