OWEGO, N.Y. – The U.S. Navy has officially bolstered its maritime strike capabilities with the delivery of its 350th MH-60R Seahawk helicopter. The aircraft, affectionately known as the “Romeo,” was handed over by Lockheed Martin during a ceremony at their facility in Owego, New York, earlier this month.

The milestone helicopter was accepted by Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 41 (HSM-41), the Navy’s Fleet Replacement Squadron responsible for training the newest generation of naval aviators and aircrew for the Pacific Fleet.

A Premier Multi-Mission Platform

The MH-60R is widely regarded as the world’s most advanced naval helicopter, specializing in anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW). Equipped with an integrated mission system, advanced sensors, and precision weaponry, the Romeo serves as the primary maritime strike asset for the U.S. Navy.

“The delivery of the 350th MH-60R is a testament to the exceptional capabilities of this aircraft and the dedication of our team,” said Ali Ruwaih, Vice President of Maritime Systems at Lockheed Martin. “This platform will remain a critical component of global ASW operations for decades to come.”

Proven Combat Performance

The delivery follows a period of high operational tempo for the Romeo fleet. Recent engagements in the Gulf of Aden saw MH-60R crews successfully intercept and shoot down an enemy drone using the aircraft’s advanced sensor suite. Additionally, the helicopters have been instrumental in neutralizing Houthi-armed skiffs in the Red Sea, safeguarding vital merchant shipping lanes.

Captain William Hargreaves, the H-60 Multi-Mission Helicopters program manager, praised the platform’s versatility. “The MH-60R has proven itself in all aspects of land and maritime operations around the globe. We are grateful to the artisans at Sikorsky for keeping this invaluable asset at the ready.”

Looking to the Future

While the U.S. Navy is currently exploring next-generation vertical lift technologies, the MH-60R fleet is expected to remain in service through the 2050s. The aircraft’s open-architecture avionics allow for rapid integration of emerging technologies, ensuring it remains effective against increasingly sophisticated submarine threats.

Beyond the United States, the MH-60R is a cornerstone of international naval cooperation, with operators including Australia, Denmark, Saudi Arabia, India, Greece, and South Korea. Upcoming deliveries are also scheduled for Spain and Norway.
