VATICAN CITY – In a move that shattered traditional diplomatic protocol, Pope Leo XIV made an unexpected appearance at a “fraternal lunch” with the bishops of Peru on Thursday. The gathering, which took place in Rome during the bishops’ ad limina visit, transformed a routine administrative meal into a deeply personal reunion between the Pontiff and the nation he considers his second home.
A Shepherd Among Friends
The Peruvian Bishops’ Conference (CEP) described the event as a “pleasant and unexpected surprise.” While the bishops were scheduled for a formal audience with the Pope on Friday, Leo XIV, formerly Robert Francis Prevost, opted for an informal encounter a day early.
The Pope’s connection to Peru is profound; before his election in May 2025, he served as an Augustinian missionary in the country for over two decades and was the Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023. During lunch, the Pope reportedly shared a white cake with the prelates, exchanging personal greetings and laughs in a relaxed atmosphere that several witnesses described as “joyful.”
Prayers for Peace and Leadership
Despite the lighthearted nature of the meal, the conversation touched on the serious challenges facing the South American nation. Bishop Carlos García Camader, President of the Peruvian Bishops’ Conference, noted that the delegation is in Rome to pray for Peru’s future.
“We pray that our future leaders will be good men and women who serve the nation, seek the common good, and above all, strive to unite and build, not to subtract or divide,” García Camader stated, echoing the social concerns of a country navigating significant political and social transitions.

Symbolic Gifts for the Vatican Gardens
As a token of their gratitude, the bishops presented the Pope with two significant gifts:
-
A Mosaic of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Representing the deep Marian devotion of the Peruvian people.
-
An Image of Saint Rose of Lima: Honoring the first canonized saint of the Americas.
These items are scheduled to be blessed and permanently installed in the Vatican Gardens on Saturday, January 31, providing a lasting symbol of the bond between the Holy See and the Peruvian Church.
Looking Ahead
The surprise lunch set the stage for Friday’s formal audience, where Pope Leo XIV urged the bishops to live “ad instar Apostolorum” (in the manner of the Apostles), emphasizing simplicity and courage. Amidst the formalities, the Pope’s message was clear: “Peru holds a special place in my heart.”
While an official date has not been set, the Peruvian ambassador has already extended a formal invitation for the Pope to visit Peru in late 2026 or 2027, a journey that would mark a historic homecoming for the “Peruvian Pope.”
