LISBON – Residents across mainland Portugal are bracing for a renewed bout of unsettled weather, as meteorologists forecast significant rainfall this week. The incoming weather system is expected to hit hardest in the northern and central regions, many of which are still reeling from the damage caused by recent severe storms.

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), a series of active frontal systems will move across the Atlantic, bringing persistent and at times heavy precipitation starting Monday. The forecast has sparked fresh concerns regarding soil saturation and the risk of localized flooding in areas already struggling with infrastructure repairs.

Storm-Hit Regions on High Alert

The Minho, Douro Litoral, and Beira Alta regions, which bore the brunt of last week’s “atmospheric river” event, are once again under close monitoring. Local civil protection authorities have warned that because the ground is already waterlogged, even moderate rainfall could lead to rapid runoff, landslides, and rising river levels.

“We are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant,” a Civil Protection spokesperson stated. “The cumulative effect of this rain, following so closely on the heels of the previous storm, significantly increases the risk of flooding in urban centers and rural valleys alike.”

A Chilly Turn in the South

While the heaviest rain is expected in the north, the southern regions, including the Alentejo and Algarve, will not be entirely spared. Forecasts indicate scattered showers and a noticeable drop in temperatures as a cold front sweeps southward by mid-week. High-altitude areas in the Serra da Estrela are also expecting snowfall, potentially complicating travel on mountain passes.

The maritime coast remains under warning as well, with high waves and strong gusts expected to lash the western seaboard. Port authorities have advised small vessels to remain in the harbor as sea conditions are predicted to deteriorate on Tuesday evening.

Economic and Infrastructure Impact

The persistent wet weather has already hampered cleanup efforts from the previous week’s flooding, which saw several national roads closed and significant damage to agricultural lands. In the Douro Valley, wine growers expressed concern over soil erosion on terraced vineyards, while in Lisbon and Porto, municipal teams are working overtime to clear drainage systems ahead of the next downpour.

As the week progresses, authorities will continue to update weather warnings. Residents are advised to follow the “Stay Safe” protocols, secure loose outdoor items, and avoid crossing flooded roads or walkways.
