WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI — A high-stakes “active shooter” situation at Temple Israel, the nation’s largest Reform synagogue, ended Thursday afternoon when security personnel fatally shot an armed suspect who had rammed a vehicle into the building.
The incident, which unfolded around 12:30 p.m. local time, triggered a massive multi-agency response including the FBI, Michigan State Police, and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that federal agents were on-site responding to the “apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation.”

The Confrontation
According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the suspect intentionally drove a truck into the synagogue complex on Walnut Lake Road. The vehicle subsequently caught fire, sending plumes of black smoke billowing from the roof of the facility.
Upon exiting the vehicle, the suspect, reportedly armed with a rifle, was immediately confronted by the synagogue’s armed security team. An exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in the suspect being killed at the scene.

Casualties: No students or staff members were injured in the attack. One security guard sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by the suspect’s vehicle.

Explosives Found: CNN reported that investigators discovered a “significant amount” of explosives inside the suspect’s vehicle following the crash.
Community on High Alert
The attack sent shockwaves through the region, coming amid heightened global tensions following the outbreak of a U.S.-Israeli war with Iran in late February.
The Jewish Federation of Detroit immediately advised all Jewish organizations in the area to enter “lockout protocol.” Nearby public schools, including West Bloomfield High and Middle Schools, were placed on lockdown as a precaution. Parents of students at Temple Israel’s early childhood center were seen sprinting to a reunification point at the nearby Jewish Community Center after police cleared the building.
Political and Legal Reaction
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement via X (formerly Twitter) calling the incident “heartbreaking.”
“Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace. Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan,” Whitmer wrote. Attorney General Dana Nessel echoed these sentiments, urging the community to “confront hate whenever it appears.”
Authorities are currently working to identify the deceased suspect and determine a motive for the assault. Federal investigators are exploring potential links to extremist groups or international influence, particularly given the timing of the conflict in the Middle East.
