LONDON — British defense officials confirmed on Thursday, March 12, 2026, that UK personnel assisted in the defense of a Western coalition base in Erbil, Iraq, following a major “suicide drone” swarm launched by Iranian-linked forces. While no British soldiers were injured, several American troops sustained minor injuries in the attack.

The strike, which occurred on Wednesday night, has sparked international concern over the evolving tactics of Iranian proxies, with UK defense chiefs alleging direct tactical influence from the Kremlin.

The Attack in Erbil

A “swarm” of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), specifically identified as Shahed drones, targeted the air base used by Western forces in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

  • The Defense: A specialized UK counter-drone team successfully intercepted and shot down two of the approaching drones.

  • The Impacts: Despite the defensive efforts, an unknown number of drones managed to strike “the camp,” causing localized damage and the reported U.S. casualties.

  • Wider Coordination: Brigadier Guy Foden, Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations, noted that both Erbil and Baghdad were struck multiple times in a “coordinated” effort throughout the night.

“Tactics Learnt from the Russians”

In a briefing to Defense Secretary John Healey at the UK’s military headquarters in Northwood, Lieutenant General Nick Perry highlighted a troubling shift in Iranian drone warfare.

“We have definitely seen the Iranian tactics… learnt from Russians,  flying them much lower so they are more effective,” Perry stated. This low-altitude flight path is designed to evade traditional radar and has proven “problematic” for current coalition defenses.

Defense Secretary Healey directly pointed to Vladimir Putin’s “hidden hand” as the likely architect of these tactical shifts. Healey argued that the Russian president is currently the only global leader benefiting from the sky-high oil prices, which surged past $100 a barrel today, to fund his ongoing war in Ukraine.

Humanitarian and Regional Fallout

The attack on Erbil is part of a broader escalation that includes a drone strike on RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus last Sunday. British intelligence believes that strike was launched by the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah from Lebanon.

The human cost of the wider war continues to climb:

  • Internal Displacement: The UN reports that 3.2 million people have now been displaced within Iran.

  • Regime Status: Unconfirmed reports have begun to circulate regarding the health of Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, with some sources suggesting he is in a coma following recent coalition strikes.

The UK Ministry of Defence remains on high alert, with officials stating that Iran has fired more than 2,000 Shahed drones across the Middle East since the U.S. and Israel launched their offensive on February 28.
