RETALIATION FOR LARIJANI ASSASSINATION TRIGGERS AIR DEFENSE SYSTEMS ACROSS FOUR NATIONS; U.S. ASSETS TARGETED
By OPEN CHRONICLE STAFF with Agencies
JERUSALEM — The Middle East stood on the precipice of total war Wednesday as Iran launched a coordinated, multi-wave barrage of ballistic missiles and suicide drones targeting Israel and several Western-aligned interests across the region. The massive assault comes less than 24 hours after the assassination of Ali Larijani, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, in a strike widely attributed to Israeli intelligence.
Explosions lit up the night skies from Tel Aviv to Amman as the “Iron Dome” and “Arrow” defense systems intercepted scores of incoming projectiles. Initial reports suggest that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) utilized its most advanced hypersonic weaponry in an attempt to saturate regional defenses.

A “Total Response”
In a statement broadcast on Iranian state television shortly after the first launches, the IRGC described the operation—codenamed “Martyr Larijani”—as a “crushing response to the Zionist entity’s cowardice.”
The scope of the attack appears significantly broader than the April 2024 escalations. Missile trails were reported not only over Israel but also over U.S. bases in Iraq and Jordan. Reports from Baghdad indicate that at least three projectiles impacted near the “Green Zone,” prompting the emergency evacuation of non-essential diplomatic personnel.
Israel Under Siege
In Tel Aviv, residents spent much of the early morning hours in bomb shelters as the city’s sirens wailed continuously. “The scale of this is unlike anything we have seen,” said Major Nir Dinar of the IDF. “We are facing a multi-directional threat. The IAF [Israeli Air Force] is currently in the air, and our defensive arrays are working at maximum capacity.”
While many missiles were intercepted, local media reported at least two direct hits on infrastructure in the Negev desert, near the Nevatim Airbase. Damage assessments are ongoing, but there are currently no confirmed reports of mass civilian casualties, thanks in part to early warning systems provided by U.S. satellite intelligence.
The U.S. and Regional Reaction
President Trump was reportedly “briefed immediately” at Mar-a-Lago and has since returned to the White House to convene the National Security Council. U.S. Navy destroyers in the Red Sea and Eastern Mediterranean were confirmed to have assisted in the shoot-down of several Iranian drones.
Jordanian authorities also confirmed that their air defenses intercepted “foreign objects” entering their airspace, a move that has previously drawn threats of retaliation from Tehran.
The “Larijani Vacuum”
The ferocity of the Iranian response underscores the significance of Ali Larijani’s death. As the “chief architect” of Iran’s regional influence and nuclear strategy, his elimination left a profound void in the regime’s leadership.
“Tehran felt they had no choice but to go big,” says Dr. Julianne West, a senior geopolitical analyst. “By targeting multiple nations and U.S. assets simultaneously, they are signaling that the rules of engagement have fundamentally changed. We are no longer in a ‘shadow war.’ This is a confrontation.”
Oil Markets in Freefall
Global markets reacted with predictable volatility. Brent Crude surged past $115 per barrel in pre-market trading, and airlines have begun a mass rerouting of flights away from the Persian Gulf and Levant.
As the sun rises over a scorched landscape, the world awaits Israel’s counter-response. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to address the nation at noon, with many fearing that Israel may now target Iran’s nuclear facilities directly—a move that would signal the final collapse of regional stability.
