ÄMARI AIR BASE, ESTONIA — Portuguese Air Force F-16AM Fighting Falcon jets currently stationed in Estonia were scrambled on Wednesday to intercept a Russian military transport aircraft flying near NATO-protected airspace.
The operation, confirmed by NATO Air Command, targeted a Russian Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane that had approached the alliance’s area of responsibility without a recognized flight plan.
First “Alpha Scramble” of the 2026 Rotation
The interception involved a high-speed emergency takeoff, known in NATO parlance as an “Alpha Scramble.” This marks the first operational alert for the Portuguese contingent since they began their rotation at the Ämari Air Base, taking over duties from the Italian Air Force.

The Portuguese mission in Estonia is part of a broader 2026 reinforcement of the Baltic Air Policing mission and includes:
-
Four F-16AM Fighting Falcon fighter jets.
-
Approximately 95 military personnel, including pilots and specialized ground crews.
Securing the Baltic Skies
The Portuguese jets successfully identified and monitored the Russian transport aircraft until it moved away from sensitive areas. Such missions are vital for the security of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, nations that rely on NATO allies for supersonic air defense capabilities.
The Portuguese Air Force remains in a high state of readiness, maintaining a 24/7 alert status to respond to any unauthorized or “dark” flights (aircraft flying without transponders or communication with civilian air traffic control) in the region.
“The quick response of the Portuguese F-16s underscores the readiness and commitment of the Alliance to protect the integrity of its member states’ airspace,” NATO Air Command stated.
This encounter comes amid continued heightened tensions in Eastern Europe, where the presence of NATO air assets serves as a primary deterrent against airspace violations.
