FORT WORTH, Texas — Amidst the high-intensity backdrop of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the Pentagon has formally approved a significant software expansion for Israel’s elite fighter fleet. On April 7, 2026, the U.S. Navy awarded Lockheed Martin an $11.4 million contract modification to develop specialized software “data loads” for the F-35I Adir—the Israeli-customized variant of the Joint Strike Fighter.

The work, fully funded by Israel through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, ensures the “Mighty” (Adir) fleet remains at the cutting edge of electronic warfare and sensor fusion as the regional air war evolves.

Hardening the “Adir” for Combat

The F-35 is widely considered a “flying supercomputer,” with millions of lines of code governing its radar, weapons systems, and stealth capabilities. This latest contract focuses on producing three “productionized plus builds.”

In defense terminology, this means taking software previously refined in laboratory environments and “hardening” it for immediate, reliable use on operational aircraft. Key details of the agreement include:

  • Project Scope: System Development and Design Phase II (software development and systems engineering).

  • Location: 80% of the work will occur at Lockheed Martin’s primary facility in Fort Worth, Texas.

  • Timeline: The project is slated for completion by March 2030.

Unique Sovereignty in the Cockpit

Israel remains the only nation permitted to integrate its own domestic software and hardware systems directly into the F-35’s baseline architecture. This “national customization” allows the Israeli Air Force (IAF) to deploy its own electronic warfare suites and precision-guided munitions.

However, this independence requires a constant engineering bridge. These new software data loads are essential to ensuring that Israeli-specific modifications remain compatible with the broader F-35 enterprise software updates delivered by the U.S. and Lockheed Martin.

Battle-Tested Reliability

With 48 of its 75 ordered Adir jets currently in service, Israel is one of the most combat-experienced F-35 operators globally. The IAF has utilized the platform extensively throughout the current conflict to neutralize air defenses and conduct long-range precision strikes.

The choice of a cost-plus-incentive-fee contract reflects the volatility of the current environment. Unlike fixed-price deals, this structure allows for flexibility in the face of rapidly changing technical requirements, crucial for an aircraft that must adapt to new Iranian-made electronic countermeasures in real-time.

As the U.S. continues to manage the FMS case, this contract represents a deepening of the “strategic code” that binds the two nations’ defense architectures during the most significant regional escalation in decades.
