BUDAPEST — Following a historic landslide victory that has ended the 16-year “illiberal” reign of Viktor Orbán, Péter Magyar has emerged as Hungary’s Prime Minister-designate. Leading the center-right Tisza party to a projected constitutional supermajority, the 45-year-old lawyer has completed a meteoric rise from government insider to the face of a new Hungarian era.
From the Inner Circle to the Opposition
Péter Magyar was not always an opponent of the establishment. Born into a prominent political family in Budapest—his great-uncle was former President Ferenc Mádl—Magyar spent two decades within the Fidesz orbit.
-
The Fidesz Years: Magyar joined Fidesz during his college years and maintained close ties to top officials, including Chief of Staff Gergely Gulyás.
-
A Power Couple: In 2006, he married Judit Varga, who would eventually become Orbán’s Justice Minister. The couple, who have three sons, were often viewed as a “golden couple” of the conservative elite before their divorce in 2023.
The Turning Point: The Pardon Scandal
Magyar’s final break with Orbán’s government occurred in early 2024. Amidst a public outcry over a presidential pardon granted to an individual involved in covering up a pedophilia case, a scandal that forced his ex-wife, Judit Varga, to resign, Magyar turned whistleblower.
He released a clandestine recording of Varga allegedly describing government interference in judicial proceedings. Claiming that the Fidesz he joined in 2002 had morphed into something unrecognizable, he declared, “The nightmare we have been living these past years will come to an end.”
The Rise of Tisza
In early 2024, Magyar took over the minor Tisza Party (Respect and Freedom) and transformed it into a national movement. His campaign relied on a grueling tour of the Hungarian countryside, traditionally Orbán’s stronghold, where he appealed to:
-
Anti-Corruption Voters: Pledging to dismantle the “oligarch system.”
-
Pro-Europeans: Promising to unlock billions of euros in frozen EU funds by restoring the rule of law.
-
Rural and Disadvantaged Communities: Focusing on the economy and the needs of the Roma community.
“Now or Never!”
Adopting a 19th-century revolutionary slogan, Magyar framed the 2026 election as a final stand for Hungarian democracy. With a projected 137 to 138 seats in the 199-member parliament, he now possesses the “supermajority” mandate needed to rewrite the very constitutional framework Orbán used to consolidate power.
As Prime Minister-designate, Magyar faces the immediate challenge of navigating a state apparatus still largely populated by Fidesz loyalists while attempting to pivot Hungary back toward the European mainstream.
