Florida — Childhood vaccination rates in the U.S. state of Florida have continued to decline during the 2025–26 school year, even as measles cases rise sharply, raising concern among public health officials about the risk of wider outbreaks.

New data from the Florida Department of Health show that immunization coverage among kindergartners has stabilized at around 88 percent for the second consecutive year. This marks a significant drop from pre-pandemic levels, when vaccination rates consistently exceeded 90 percent and reached as high as 94 percent in 2016.

Declining Coverage Across Age Groups

The trend is not limited to younger children. Vaccination rates among seventh-grade students also declined slightly, falling from 92.1 percent last year to 91.9 percent in the current school year. While the change appears small, it brings coverage to its lowest level in more than a decade.

Health experts warn that even modest declines can have serious consequences when dealing with highly contagious diseases such as measles.

Herd Immunity Threshold Not Met

Public health guidelines generally recommend vaccination rates of around 95 percent to maintain herd immunity, a level of protection that helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases within a community.

At current levels, Florida falls well below that threshold. This gap increases the risk of outbreaks and places vulnerable populations at greater risk, including individuals who are immunocompromised or unable to receive vaccines for medical reasons.

Measles Cases Raise Alarm

The decline in vaccination rates comes as measles cases in the state have reached record levels in 2026. Measles is one of the most contagious viral diseases, capable of spreading rapidly in communities with insufficient immunization coverage.

Health officials emphasize that maintaining high vaccination rates is critical to preventing the re-emergence of diseases that had previously been brought under control.

Post-Pandemic Trends and Public Health Challenges

The drop in vaccination rates reflects broader national trends seen since the COVID-19 pandemic, when routine immunizations were disrupted and vaccine hesitancy increased in some communities.

Efforts to restore confidence in vaccination programs and improve access to preventive care are now central to public health strategies.

A Growing Concern

As immunization levels remain below recommended thresholds, the situation in Florida highlights the delicate balance required to sustain community protection against infectious diseases.

Without a reversal in current trends, experts warn that outbreaks could become more frequent, placing additional strain on healthcare systems and exposing at-risk populations to preventable illness.
