A security incident disrupted the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., after shots were fired inside the venue, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and the evacuation of top officials, including U.S. President Donald Trump.
The event, held at the Washington Hilton Hotel, was underway when the disturbance occurred. Authorities confirmed that one suspect is now in custody following what officials described as a rapid and coordinated intervention by the Secret Service and local law enforcement agencies.
President Trump addressed the situation shortly after being evacuated alongside First Lady Melania Trump. In a public statement, he praised the actions of security personnel, noting their speed and bravery in neutralizing the threat. He also confirmed that key officials, including Vice President JD Vance and members of the Cabinet, were unharmed.

Authorities later disclosed that a law enforcement officer was injured during the incident but is reported to be in stable condition. The officer was transported to a nearby hospital and is receiving medical care.
According to early reports, the suspect has been identified as Cole Thomas Allen, a 31-year-old believed to be from California. President Trump described the individual as a “lone wolf,” adding that there is currently no indication of additional suspects.
Speaking at a press briefing, Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed that the suspect attempted to breach a Secret Service checkpoint located in the hotel lobby. Agents on site engaged the individual, preventing further escalation.

Jeff Carroll, interim chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, revealed that the suspect was armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. Preliminary findings suggest the individual was a guest at the hotel at the time of the incident.
Officials have not yet determined a motive, and investigations remain ongoing.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro confirmed that the suspect will face two federal charges. The defendant is expected to be arraigned in federal district court on Monday.
In the aftermath of the incident, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner has been postponed, with plans to reschedule the event within the next 30 days. Authorities continue to assess the situation as more details emerge.
