The United States will withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany over the next six to 12 months, according to an order issued by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed the planned reduction, which marks a significant shift in the U.S. military footprint in Europe at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions.

The decision follows a diplomatic dispute between U.S. President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Merz had suggested that Iran had “humiliated” the United States during negotiations related to the ongoing conflict, prompting a sharp reaction from Trump, who warned of potential troop withdrawals.

Currently, around 86,000 U.S. troops are stationed across Europe, with roughly 39,000 based in Germany. The presence has long been a cornerstone of NATO’s defense structure and a symbol of transatlantic security cooperation.

The planned reduction is expected to be carried out gradually, with officials noting that troop numbers can fluctuate due to routine rotations and military exercises. However, the scale of the withdrawal has raised questions about the future of U.S. commitments to European defense.

Germany hosts several key U.S. military installations, including logistics hubs, command centers, and air bases that support operations across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

The move comes amid broader tensions within the NATO alliance, as well as ongoing debates in Washington over military spending and strategic priorities. It also coincides with increased uncertainty surrounding the conflict with Iran and shifting global security dynamics.

While U.S. officials have not detailed where the withdrawn troops will be redeployed, the decision is likely to have implications for both European security planning and U.S. military posture worldwide.
