Russia has announced a temporary ceasefire in its war with Ukraine for May 8 and 9, citing the commemoration of Victory Day, one of the most significant national holidays marking the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

In a statement released by the Russian Defense Ministry, Moscow said the pause in hostilities is intended to honor the anniversary and expressed hope that Ukraine would also observe the ceasefire.

However, the announcement was accompanied by a stark warning. Russian officials said they would take “all necessary measures” to ensure the security of the celebrations and accused Volodymyr Zelenskyy of issuing threats related to potential strikes on Moscow during the commemorations.

The ministry warned that if Ukraine attempts to disrupt Victory Day events, Russian forces would respond with a “massive missile strike” targeting central Kyiv. It also urged civilians and foreign diplomatic personnel in the city to leave as a precaution.

Moscow stated that it had previously refrained from such large-scale strikes for what it described as humanitarian reasons, but indicated that it would not hesitate to act if the celebrations were threatened.

The ceasefire announcement comes as tensions remain high, with both sides continuing military operations across multiple fronts. Ukrainian authorities have not yet publicly responded to the proposal.

Victory Day, celebrated annually on May 9, holds deep historical and symbolic importance in Russia, often marked by military parades and national ceremonies.

While temporary ceasefires have occasionally been declared during major holidays, previous attempts have often been fragile, with both sides accusing each other of violations.

The latest proposal adds another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile conflict, with questions remaining over whether the ceasefire will hold or lead to further escalation.
