Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks on Wednesday with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Beijing amid rising geopolitical tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing regional instability.
According to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency, the meeting comes just days before US President Donald Trump is expected to travel to China for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled for May 14 and 15.
The diplomatic engagement between Beijing and Tehran took place against the backdrop of continuing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where maritime traffic remains heavily disrupted following weeks of military confrontations and political standoffs involving Iran, the United States, and regional allies.
Araghchi’s visit marks his first face-to-face meeting with Wang Yi since the escalation that followed US and Israeli strikes against Iran on Feb. 28.
Since the start of the crisis, the two foreign ministers have maintained regular communication through a series of telephone calls focused on regional stability, maritime security, and diplomatic coordination.
While details of Wednesday’s discussions were not fully disclosed, analysts expect the talks to have included the future of regional negotiations, energy security, and China’s strategic interests in Gulf trade routes.
China has consistently called for diplomatic solutions and restraint from all sides, warning that prolonged instability in the Gulf could have serious consequences for global energy markets and international trade.
The meeting also highlights Beijing’s growing diplomatic role in Middle Eastern affairs as China seeks to position itself as a key mediator while strengthening ties with regional powers.
Trump’s upcoming visit to Beijing is expected to focus heavily on tensions involving Iran, maritime security in the Gulf, and broader US-China strategic competition.
