Israeli authorities have warned that Iranian intelligence services are increasingly using social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp to recruit spies inside Israel’s military establishment, including personnel connected to the country’s air defense systems.

Officials described the campaign as part of an expanding covert intelligence confrontation between Israel and Iran, with investigators alleging that Tehran is exploiting financial vulnerability, digital manipulation, and sexual blackmail to penetrate sensitive sectors of the Israeli defense structure.

Concerns Over Military Infiltration

The latest alarm followed the arrest of two members of the Israeli Air Force on espionage-related charges.

According to investigators, approximately 50 suspects have been linked to more than 20 separate espionage cases over the past 18 months.

Among the most serious incidents was the alleged involvement of a reserve soldier connected to Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense network.

Security officials believe Iran’s objective is to gather detailed intelligence capable of assisting future military planning and identifying strategic human or infrastructure targets.

Recruitment Through Social Media and “Honeytraps”

Captain Seffi Berger from the Lahav 433 major crimes division said Iranian operatives infiltrate online communities focused on freelance work and employment opportunities.

According to investigators, agents approach targets through apparently harmless conversations before gradually attempting to recruit or manipulate them.

Authorities said some operations also involve so-called “honeytraps,” in which individuals are lured through adult websites or intimate online interactions before compromising material is used for blackmail.

Officials believe Iranian intelligence services deliberately target individuals experiencing financial pressure or emotional vulnerability to increase the likelihood of cooperation.

Smartphones Becoming Espionage Tools

Israeli security agencies warned that smartphones are increasingly being transformed into espionage tools inside military facilities and sensitive installations.

Officials said operatives encourage targets to share images, locations, internal information or access credentials through encrypted messaging platforms.

Investigators described the digital methods as highly adaptive and difficult to detect, especially when recruitment efforts begin through ordinary online conversations.

Financial Promises and Severe Consequences

Authorities also highlighted what they described as the illusion of easy money used to attract recruits.

According to security officials, one espionage network involving seven suspects allegedly received close to $300,000 in payments.

In another case, however, a soldier reportedly received only $21 before being arrested and sentenced to prison.

Captain Berger warned that such payments ultimately destroy lives rather than improve them.

Meanwhile, Israel’s internal security agency, the Shin Bet, continues searching for additional suspects believed to still be active.

Israeli authorities have launched public awareness campaigns urging citizens and military personnel to avoid engaging with anonymous online contacts and to report suspicious digital interactions immediately.

The latest revelations underline how modern espionage increasingly blends cyber tactics, psychological manipulation, and social media exploitation into broader geopolitical conflicts.
