Colombia opened its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over tournament debutants Uzbekistan on Wednesday, moving to the top of Group K after the first round of matches.

Playing in Mexico City, the South American side overcame a determined Uzbek challenge to secure all three points and establish an early advantage in a group that also includes Portugal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Colombia broke the deadlock shortly before halftime through Daniel Muñoz. The defender finished off an excellent move in the 41st minute after being set up by Liverpool star Luis Díaz, giving the Cafeteros a deserved lead heading into the break.

Uzbekistan, making its first appearance at a FIFA World Cup, responded admirably and found an equalizer in the 60th minute. Abbosbek Fayzullaev capitalized on a rare opening to score a historic goal for his country, briefly raising hopes of a memorable result.

However, Colombia quickly regained control. Just five minutes after the equalizer, Luis Díaz crowned an impressive performance by finding the net himself. The winger, who had already contributed an assist, produced a decisive finish in the 65th minute to restore Colombia’s advantage.

As Uzbekistan pushed forward in search of another equalizer, Colombia remained dangerous on the counterattack. Deep into stoppage time, Jaminton Campaz sealed the victory with a goal in the ninth minute of added time, putting the result beyond doubt and securing a strong start to the tournament.

Colombia Leads the Group

The result places Colombia alone at the summit of Group K with three points. Earlier in the day, Portugal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo played out a 1-1 draw, leaving both nations on one point.

Veteran striker Luis Suárez played a significant role in Colombia’s attack before being substituted in the 80th minute, while midfielder Richard Ríos entered shortly afterward to help see out the victory.

Promising Start for the Cafeteros

Colombia entered the tournament with high expectations and delivered a composed performance in its opening match. The combination of defensive stability, attacking quality and the influence of key players such as Luis Díaz proved decisive against a spirited Uzbek side.

For Uzbekistan, despite the defeat, the tournament debut offered encouraging signs. The Central Asian nation showed resilience and determination against one of South America’s strongest teams and will look to build on that display in its upcoming group matches.

With three points secured and momentum on their side, Colombia now turns its attention to the next challenge, knowing that another positive result could bring them significantly closer to the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup.
