NATO Announces Next Generation Airborne Warning System with Saab GlobalEye Fleet

NATO has unveiled a major modernization of its airborne surveillance capabilities, announcing the procurement of Saab GlobalEye aircraft as the Alliance’s next-generation Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) during the NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum held in Ankara on July 7.

The decision marks one of the most significant investments in NATO’s integrated air defence network in decades and represents an important step toward replacing part of the Alliance’s aging fleet of Boeing E,3 Sentry surveillance aircraft, which have served as the backbone of NATO’s airborne early warning operations for more than forty years.

A New Era of Airborne Surveillance

The Saab GlobalEye platform will provide NATO with advanced multi-domain surveillance capabilities, allowing a single aircraft to monitor activities across the air, land and maritime environments simultaneously.

Equipped with sophisticated radar and sensor systems, the aircraft is designed to detect, identify, and track a broad spectrum of modern threats, including:

  • Swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
  • Ballistic missiles
  • Cruise missiles
  • Aircraft operating at long range
  • Maritime targets
  • Ground-based military activity

The enhanced surveillance capability is expected to significantly improve NATO’s situational awareness while strengthening command and control during both peacetime monitoring and military operations.

Strengthening NATO’s Deterrence

Alliance officials described the procurement as another key milestone in NATO’s broader effort to modernize its defence capabilities amid an increasingly complex global security environment.

The GlobalEye program forms part of a wider package of industrial and defence initiatives announced during the Ankara Summit, which also includes new investments in missile defence, drone technologies, ammunition production and multinational procurement projects.

NATO leaders say these initiatives are designed to reinforce collective deterrence and ensure the Alliance remains prepared for evolving threats across Europe and beyond.

International Industrial Cooperation

The project also highlights growing cooperation between defence industries across the Atlantic.

While Saab, headquartered in Sweden, leads production of the GlobalEye aircraft, the program includes significant participation from Canadian and European industries, alongside key technological contributions from American companies.

NATO described the initiative as an example of successful transatlantic industrial collaboration that combines advanced European aerospace technology with North American defence expertise.

In parallel with the AWACS announcement, eight additional NATO members launched a separate cooperative program to acquire airborne early warning capabilities tailored to their own national defence requirements.

Eleven Nations Join the Coalition

The multinational procurement program currently includes eleven NATO member states:

  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Germany
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Romania
  • Sweden

By pooling resources, participating countries aim to reduce procurement costs while ensuring interoperability across NATO operations.

Preparing for Future Threats

Military planners increasingly view airborne surveillance platforms as essential for responding to rapidly evolving security challenges, particularly the growing use of drones, long-range precision weapons, and hybrid warfare tactics.

The introduction of GlobalEye is expected to enhance NATO’s ability to detect threats earlier, coordinate multinational responses more effectively, and improve overall readiness across the Alliance.

The announcement reinforces NATO’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its military capabilities as member states continue adapting to an increasingly contested security environment.
