RABAT — The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR) have officially integrated the first units of their state-of-the-art AH-64E Apache attack helicopters into active service. The aircraft saw their debut operational deployment during the African Lion 2025 military exercises in May, marking a significant leap in Morocco’s tactical air capabilities and its strategic partnership with the United States.
A Milestone in Modernization
Under a $440 million deal signed in June 2020, Morocco ordered 24 units of the “Guardian” variant (AH-64E), the most advanced version of the legendary Boeing attack helicopter.
-
Operational Status: Six helicopters are currently fully operational.
-
Personnel Training: A specialized program conducted by the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency has already certified 24 Moroccan military personnel to operate and maintain the fleet.
-
Future Expansion: The agreement includes an option for Morocco to acquire an additional 12 units, potentially bringing the total fleet to 36 aircraft.
Superior Technology: The “Guardian” Advantage
The AH-64E is recognized globally for its combat effectiveness. The Moroccan configuration includes several high-tech upgrades:
-
All-Weather Target Acquisition: Modern systems provide high-definition target information during the day, at night, and in adverse weather conditions.
-
Maritime Fire Control: In a significant tactical update, the fire control radar has been optimized to classify and engage targets in maritime environments, enhancing Morocco’s coastal defense.
-
Night Vision Navigation: Advanced sensors allow pilots to navigate low-altitude terrain in total darkness with unprecedented precision.
The Arsenal: Missiles and Precision Munitions
The Apache deal is not just about the airframe; it includes a massive stockpile of advanced weaponry designed for diverse combat scenarios:
| Weapon System | Quantity | Primary Purpose |
| Hellfire Missiles | 551 | Laser-guided tactical missiles for tanks, bunkers, and radar systems. |
| Stinger Missiles (AIM-92H) | 200 | Air-to-air engagement for neutralising drones and hovering helicopters. |
| APKWS Rocket Kits | 558 | Precision-guided rocket kits for high-accuracy, low-collateral damage strikes. |
“The AH-64E represents the cutting edge of military technology, providing the Royal Armed Forces with a versatile platform capable of operating across air, land, and sea domains,” stated a report by the Moroccan Military Forum.
Strategic Regional Impact
The deployment of the Apache fleet positions Morocco as one of the few nations in Africa and the Middle East to operate the “E” variant. This modernization effort is widely viewed as a response to evolving regional security challenges, providing a deterrent against armored threats and enhancing the country’s counter-terrorism and border surveillance capabilities.
As the remaining 18 units from the initial order continue to arrive from Boeing’s production lines, Morocco’s aerial supremacy in the Maghreb is set to be firmly consolidated by the end of the decade.
