In the early hours of January 3, United States forces executed one of the most complex military operations ever conducted in Latin America. The mission, codenamed Absolute Resolve, ended with the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in what officials described as a precision strike that combined air, cyber, and special operations warfare. At the center of growing speculation is a little-known but highly advanced aircraft, the RQ 170 Sentinel stealth drone, a platform that may have provided the invisible eyes guiding the raid.

Although the Pentagon has not confirmed the Sentinel’s involvement, multiple defense analysts and open-source intelligence images point to the presence of RQ 170 aircraft operating from Caribbean bases during the operation. Photos circulated online appear to show the tailless stealth drone returning to a United States facility in Puerto Rico shortly after the Caracas raid, a rare public glimpse of one of the Air Force’s most secretive systems.

A drone built for the most dangerous skies

The RQ 170 Sentinel was designed to fly where other aircraft cannot. Built by Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works, the drone features a flying wing design that dramatically reduces its radar signature. It is powered by a jet engine, flies at subsonic speed, and is unarmed, but its true power lies in its sensors. The Sentinel carries a sophisticated suite of optical, infrared, and electronic intelligence equipment that allows it to monitor communications, radar systems, and movement on the ground while remaining almost invisible.

Operated by the 432nd Wing at Creech Air Force Base and the 30th Reconnaissance Squadron at Tonopah in Nevada, the RQ 170 is typically deployed only for missions of the highest strategic value. It has previously been linked to surveillance operations over Afghanistan and was famously captured by Iran in 2011, an incident that revealed how deep into hostile airspace the aircraft could penetrate.

The Caracas connection

Defense specialists believe the RQ 170 may have played a similar role over Caracas to the one it performed during the hunt for Osama bin Laden in 2011. In that operation, persistent, covert surveillance of a single compound allowed American planners to map routines, guard rotations, and electronic activity before sending in special forces.

In Venezuela, analysts suggest the Sentinel may have orbited at high altitude over the capital, quietly monitoring Maduro’s residence and surrounding military units. Operating in emissions control mode, the drone can collect signals intelligence without broadcasting anything that might reveal its location. This would allow it to detect air defense radar, radio communications, and even electronic jamming, giving US commanders a real-time picture of what Venezuelan forces were doing as helicopters and strike aircraft moved into position.

The drone’s role may also have extended to supporting the suppression of Venezuelan air defenses. As US aircraft approached Caracas, the Joint Air Component disabled radar and missile systems to create a corridor for the helicopters carrying special operations troops. A platform like the RQ 170 would be ideal for identifying active radars and tracking electronic emissions, enabling precision strikes against them.

A rare operational glimpse

What makes the Sentinel’s alleged role in Absolute Resolve especially notable is the apparent confirmation of its presence in Latin America weeks before the raid. Defense reporting indicates that personnel patches seen in online images from Air Force Southern suggest the drone had been forward deployed in the region since December, likely in preparation for the mission.

The RQ 170 fleet is believed to number only between 20 and 30 aircraft, making each deployment significant. Its use in Venezuela, if confirmed, would mark one of the most politically sensitive and technically demanding operations in the drone’s history.

A glimpse into future warfare

Trump publicly praised the scale and coordination of the operation, pointing to the vast mix of aircraft, helicopters, and fighters that supported the raid. Behind that visible power, platforms like the RQ 170 likely provided the invisible backbone that made such precision possible.

By silently mapping air defenses, tracking communications, and watching key targets around the clock, the Sentinel represents the modern face of military intelligence, one in which dominance comes not just from firepower but from information superiority.

As Maduro and Flores prepare to face charges in a New York courtroom, the world is left with a rare glimpse of how the United States now projects power. If the RQ 170 Sentinel indeed hovered unseen above Caracas, then Absolute Resolve may be remembered not only as a dramatic political moment, but also as a showcase of how stealth, data, and drones now shape the battlefield long before the first boots ever touch the ground.
