DOHA/TEHRAN — The State of Qatar has issued a blistering ultimatum to the Islamic Republic of Iran, warning that it reserves the right to a full military response if Tehran does not immediately cease its missile and drone campaign against the Gulf nation.
The escalation follows a high-stakes telephone call between Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and their Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi. During the exchange, Qatari officials characterized the ongoing Iranian assaults as “unjustified” and increasingly indiscriminate.
Civilian Infrastructure Under Fire
While Iran has claimed its operations are surgically focused on neutralizing American military assets, specifically the sprawling Al Udeid Air Base, Doha reports a far grimmer reality on the ground. According to an official government statement, Iranian strikes have repeatedly hit residential areas, civilian zones, and vital national infrastructure, including Qatar’s main international airport.
“The sovereignty of Qatar is not a secondary concern to regional geopolitics,” a Qatari spokesperson noted. “Targeting our civilian population and essential transport hubs is an act of aggression that cannot be ignored under the guise of anti-Western sentiment.”
The Iranian Defense: “US Interests Only”
In a defiant response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi attempted to downplay the crisis, insisting that the IRGC’s ballistic missiles are calibrated solely to strike “US interests” within Qatari borders.
Araghchi reportedly told Qatari officials there was “no reason for protest,” arguing that Doha’s hosting of the largest American military installation in the Middle East makes such strikes an unfortunate but necessary component of Iran’s broader war effort against the United States and Israel.
A Shift in Gulf Neutrality?
Historically, Qatar has maintained a delicate balancing act, serving as a key mediator between Washington and Tehran. However, as “Operation Epic Fury” enters its first week and Iranian drones set the Dubai consulate ablaze while missiles rain down on Doha, that neutrality is evaporating.
If Qatar follows through on its threat of a military response, it would mark a catastrophic expansion of the war, drawing one of the world’s wealthiest energy exporters directly into a hot conflict with its neighbor across the Persian Gulf.
