Netflix has once again adjusted its subscription costs in the United States, raising questions about when similar hikes might reach international markets, including Europe. The streaming giant announced that its most affordable tier, the ad-supported plan featuring 720p content, has increased from $7.99 to $8.99 per month.
The price adjustments extend across the platform’s entire service menu. The ‘Standard’ plan has risen from $17.99 to $19.99, while the top-tier ‘Premium’ plan, which offers 4K and HDR streaming, saw a jump from $24.99 to $26.99. This marks the second price hike in just over a year, following a previous update in January 2025.
Since that last adjustment, Netflix has aggressively expanded its content offerings beyond traditional films and series. The platform has integrated video podcasts, live events, and a growing library of games, while also rolling out significant interface overhauls for smart TVs and mobile devices to justify the rising costs.
Netflix is not alone in this trend. The entire streaming industry is undergoing a period of price correction, with competitors such as Prime Video, Paramount Plus, HBO Max, and Apple TV Plus all implementing monthly fee increases recently.
While the current price hike is exclusive to the U.S. market, industry analysts suggest it is only a matter of time before these changes are implemented globally. If the trend follows previous patterns, European subscribers could soon see similar increases. In markets like Portugal, for instance, estimates suggest the ‘Basic’ plan could rise to €9.99, the ‘Standard’ to €14.99, and the ‘Premium’ tier to €19.99.
For now, European subscribers remain on their current billing cycles, but the precedent set in the U.S. suggests that the era of cheaper streaming is rapidly coming to an end.
