Sweden has announced a significant new military commitment to Ukraine, confirming plans to donate 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets while also preparing for the future acquisition of 20 newer Gripen E aircraft.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson revealed the decision during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Swedish city of Uppsala, describing the move as part of a long-term strategy to strengthen Ukraine’s air force and European security.
According to Kristersson, Ukraine has identified the Swedish-made Gripen platform as a priority option for its future air capabilities, particularly the advanced Gripen E version.
“Negotiations are ongoing, and we will be able to transfer these aircraft by 2030,” Kristersson said while discussing the broader modernization plans.
As part of the immediate support package, Sweden will transfer 16 used Gripen C/D aircraft to Ukraine, with deliveries expected to begin in early 2027.
The Swedish leader stressed that the decision would not only improve Ukraine’s defensive capabilities but also contribute to wider European security.
“This will strengthen Ukraine’s air defence and Europe’s air defence,” he stated.
The announcement marks one of the most substantial Western fighter jet commitments to Kyiv since the beginning of the war with Russia. The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is widely regarded as a versatile multirole combat aircraft designed for rapid deployment, advanced electronic warfare, and operations from dispersed bases.
Ukraine has spent recent years modernizing its air force with Western aircraft as it seeks to reduce dependence on aging Soviet-era systems. Kyiv has already begun integrating F-16 fighter jets supplied by several NATO countries, while discussions around the Gripen platform have intensified since 2024.
In October 2025, Sweden signed a letter of intent with Ukraine regarding the potential sale of between 100 and 150 Gripen E aircraft. Zelenskyy previously indicated that the first Gripen deliveries could begin as early as 2026, though the current Swedish timetable points to operational transfers beginning the following year.
The Gripen E is considered one of Europe’s most advanced combat aircraft, featuring upgraded radar systems, enhanced electronic warfare capabilities, and improved interoperability with NATO forces.
The Swedish announcement comes amid growing concern across Europe about regional air defense readiness and long-term military deterrence following continued instability linked to the war in Ukraine.
