In the largest ballistic missile assault on the Ukrainian capital since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russian forces fired more than 40 missiles at Kyiv in under an hour overnight.
The intense barrage resulted in at least one confirmed fatality and left 16 others injured. Falling debris and direct strikes caused extensive damage to residential neighborhoods and key civilian infrastructure across the city.
Scaled Attack Strategy
According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the overnight assault involved a total of 166 aerial weapons across Ukraine. This included 125 attack drones and 41 missiles, with Kyiv serving as the primary target.
The incoming threat featured a mix of heavy and fast weapon systems, making interception extremely difficult for local air defenses.
| Missile Type | Quantity Fired |
| Iskander-M & S-400 Ballistic | 25 |
| Zircon Hypersonic | 10 |
| Oniks Anti-Ship | 3 |
| Kh-59/69 Guided Air-Launched | 3 |
Ukrainian air defense systems successfully intercepted 126 targets, which included 18 missiles and 108 drones. However, 23 missiles and 10 drones bypassed defenses, striking 20 different locations.

Civilian Impact and Destruction
The speed of the ballistic missiles significantly compressed the warning time for residents, offering only minutes to seek shelter after sirens sounded. The rapid succession of impacts hit multiple urban zones before emergency teams could fully assess initial damages.
The State Emergency Service deployed nearly 600 emergency workers to manage fires and clear debris across five main districts.
-
Shevchenkivskyi District: The area surrounding the Lukianivska metro station suffered severe structural impact. A subway entrance was left in ruins, and falling debris filled the underground station with smoke while residents sheltered inside. Emergency crews extinguished fires in a three-story building and recovered the attack’s single confirmed fatality from this zone.
-
Solomianskyi District: Firefighters battled significant blazes in an office building and residential complexes. Rescuers spent hours removing unstable facade elements and damaged balconies from a five-story apartment building to prevent secondary collapses.
-
Kyiv Oblast: Beyond the city lines, the assault caused a massive fire in the Bucha district. The strikes ignited two warehouse facilities, blanketing an area of approximately 100,000 square meters. Over 200 firefighters, 73 vehicles, and three helicopters were required to contain the fire.
Urgent Appeals for Air Defense
President Zelenskyy emphasized that defending against ballistic threats remains Ukraine’s highest tactical priority. Over the course of a single week, Russia has launched roughly 1,450 attack drones, 1,640 guided aerial bombs, and 99 missiles across the nation.
The Ukrainian government continues to urge international partners to accelerate the delivery of specialized anti-ballistic platforms, such as the US-made Patriot system. These specialized tools remain in short supply but are vital for intercepting high-speed ballistic trajectories before they reach dense civilian centers.
