Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed General Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Army, entrusting one of the country’s youngest senior officers with leading its armed forces through one of the most difficult phases of the war against Russia.
The appointment represents the most significant change in Ukraine’s military leadership since the conflict entered its fifth year and reflects Kyiv’s effort to place a new generation of battlefield commanders at the forefront of military decision-making.
Drapatyi succeeds to the role after serving as commander of the Joint Forces and is widely regarded as one of Ukraine’s most experienced operational commanders despite being only 43 years old.

A career forged by war
Born on 21 November 1982 in Kamianets-Podilskyi, western Ukraine, Mykhailo Drapatyi graduated from the Kharkiv Institute of Tank Troops in 2004.
He began his military career with the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade, steadily rising through the ranks before becoming one of the officers most closely associated with Ukraine’s military operations following the outbreak of fighting in eastern Ukraine in 2014.
Unlike many senior officers whose careers began during the Soviet era, Drapatyi belongs to a younger generation of commanders shaped almost entirely by the modern Ukrainian military and by years of continuous combat against Russian-backed forces and, later, Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Early combat experience
Drapatyi first gained national recognition during the early stages of the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
As commander of the second battalion of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade, he participated in operations around Mariupol. On 9 May 2014, he led an armoured column into the city to reinforce Ukrainian forces after separatist fighters attempted to seize the local police headquarters.
He also took part in the fighting around the Izvaryne Cauldron, one of the most challenging engagements of the early Donbas campaign.
These operations established his reputation as a commander willing to lead from the front under difficult battlefield conditions.
Leadership and military education
Alongside his operational experience, Drapatyi continued his professional military education.
He later assumed command of the 58th Motorized Infantry Brigade, directing operations along the strategically important Bakhmut highway.
His academic achievements earned him recognition as the Best Graduate of the Ivan Cherniakhovskyi National Defense University, where he received the prestigious Queen’s Sword, presented by the British ambassador in recognition of outstanding leadership.
The combination of advanced military education and extensive combat experience has made Drapatyi one of Ukraine’s most respected operational commanders.
Key role in the full-scale invasion
When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Drapatyi was serving as Deputy Commander of the Joint Forces for Training.
He soon moved to active frontline command in southern Ukraine, where Russian forces had achieved rapid advances during the opening weeks of the invasion.
One of his most notable achievements came during the Kherson counteroffensive in the autumn of 2022.
As commander of the Kherson Tactical Operational Group, Drapatyi played an important role in the campaign that forced Russian troops to withdraw from the western bank of the Dnipro River, one of Ukraine’s most significant military victories of the war.
Rapid promotion through the ranks
Following the Kherson operation, Drapatyi continued to receive increasingly senior appointments.
In February 2024, he became Deputy Chief of the General Staff for Military Training, later taking command of Special Operations in the Luhansk sector.
He was promoted to the rank of Major General in October 2024 and received several of Ukraine’s highest military honours, including the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky and the honorary title of Hero of the Ukrainian People.
On 29 November 2024, he was appointed Commander of the Ground Forces, before assuming responsibility for the Joint Forces Group defending the Kharkiv front in October 2025.
A new generation of commanders
Military analysts frequently describe Drapatyi as representing a new generation of Ukrainian leadership that has emerged during the war.
His approach combines traditional battlefield experience with modern operational planning, rapid decision-making and greater integration of intelligence, drones and precision-strike capabilities.
Supporters argue that commanders of his generation better understand the realities of contemporary warfare, having spent much of their careers adapting to evolving Russian tactics.
A leadership change at a critical moment
Drapatyi’s appointment follows a broader reshaping of Ukraine’s military leadership initiated by President Zelenskyy.
According to Ukrainian media reports, Drapatyi was considered the leading candidate among several senior officers evaluated for the position.
His appointment comes as Ukraine faces continued Russian offensives across multiple sectors, increasing pressure on frontline units and the ongoing challenge of sustaining military operations while securing international military assistance.
By placing Drapatyi at the head of the armed forces, Kyiv is signalling its intention to combine experienced battlefield leadership with a younger generation of commanders capable of adapting to one of the most demanding conflicts in modern European history.
As the war enters another critical phase, General Mykhailo Drapatyi now assumes responsibility for directing Ukraine’s military strategy at a moment that could shape the future course of the conflict.
