Liga Portugal Betclic’s fifth matchday is complete, and the early shape of the 2026/27 season is becoming increasingly intriguing.
FC Porto remain the only side with a perfect record after five rounds, but SL Benfica and Sporting CP continue to apply pressure behind them. Santa Clara have also emerged as one of the stories of the opening weeks, while FC Arouca remain firmly inside the leading group.
Across nine matches, Matchday 5 offered everything from Porto’s hard-earned victory over Moreirense to Santa Clara’s emphatic four-goal performance, Braga’s comeback at Alverca and two goalless draws that underlined just how competitive the league has become.
Porto Make It Five From Five
FC Porto maintained their flawless start with a 2–1 victory over Moreirense, moving onto 15 points from their opening five league matches.
Moreirense provided an early warning when Dinis Pinto struck in the 20th minute, but Porto responded before half-time through Jan Bednarek in the 37th minute.
The decisive moment arrived after the interval. William Gomes scored in the 58th minute, completing the turnaround and ensuring Porto emerged from another potentially difficult afternoon with all three points.
Five matches. Five victories. Fifteen points.
Porto have combined that consistency with an outstanding defensive record, establishing themselves as the early benchmark of the championship.
Sporting Keep Up the Pressure
Sporting CP remained firmly in the title conversation with a controlled 2–0 victory over Nacional.
Luis Suárez opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, continuing his productive start to the campaign, before Flávio Gonçalves doubled Sporting’s advantage in the 49th minute.
The victory took Sporting to 13 points from five matches and maintained their unbeaten opening to the season.
With four victories and one draw, Sporting have done almost everything required of a championship contender. The problem for everyone chasing the summit is that Porto have so far done even more.
Benfica Cruise Past Marítimo
SL Benfica delivered one of the most convincing away performances of the round, beating Marítimo 3–0.
Leandro Barreiro struck after seven minutes, immediately putting Benfica in control. He added his second in the 71st minute before Gianluca Prestianni completed the scoring in the 82nd.
It was another demonstration of Benfica’s attacking depth.
The result initially moved Benfica onto 10 points from four matches. Their subsequently played rearranged Matchday 3 fixture against Moreirense — a 4–0 Benfica victory on September 9 — has since taken them to 13 points from five games and given them the league’s most productive attack with 18 goals.
That later result does not belong to Matchday 5, but it changes the context in which the completed round is now viewed: Benfica and Sporting are level on 13 points behind Porto.
Braga Turn It Around at Alverca
SC Braga had to recover from behind to claim a 2–1 away victory against FC Alverca.
Chiquinho gave Alverca the lead in the 27th minute, raising the possibility of an upset.
Braga responded after the break through Pau Víctor, who equalised in the 50th minute and struck again seven minutes later to turn the match completely around.
The comeback kept Braga unbeaten, although their rearranged fixtures mean the table does not yet provide a direct comparison with clubs that have completed five matches.
Santa Clara Produce the Statement of the Round
If one result stood out for its margin, it came in the Azores.
Santa Clara demolished Rio Ave 4–0, continuing an excellent beginning to the season.
Brenner scored after only three minutes, giving Rio Ave an immediate problem. Tiago Ribeiro made it 2–0 in the 47th minute, and Vinícius Lopes added another five minutes later.
Luis Fernando completed the scoring in the 90th minute.
Santa Clara emerged from Matchday 5 with 11 points from five games — three wins, two draws and no defeats — placing themselves unexpectedly but deservedly among the early leaders.
They are no longer merely enjoying a good start. Five rounds into the campaign, they have earned the right to be taken seriously.
Four Goals and No Winner Between Estrela and Famalicão
One of the round’s most entertaining matches came between Estrela Amadora and Famalicão, who shared the points in a 2–2 draw.
Famalicão’s Georgios Koutsias scored after just two minutes, but Estrela responded in the second half through Leandro Antonetti in the 57th minute.
Max Scholze put Estrela ahead in the 69th, only for Koutsias to strike again in the 80th minute and rescue a point for Famalicão.
It was a match that changed direction repeatedly and one in which neither side could quite deliver the final blow.
Académico Take the Points at Gil Vicente
Académico de Viseu recorded a valuable 1–0 away victory over Gil Vicente, with João Guilherme scoring the only goal in the fourth minute.
What followed was less about attacking spectacle and more about protecting an advantage.
Académico did precisely that, turning an early goal into three important away points.
Vitória and Casa Pia Cancel Each Other Out
There were no goals between Vitória SC and Casa Pia, with the match ending 0–0.
In a round containing several strong attacking performances, this was instead a contest decided by defensive organisation and missed opportunities.
For both teams, a point provided something to build upon, but neither was able to produce the decisive attacking moment.
Estoril and Arouca Close the Round Without a Goal
Matchday 5 concluded with another 0–0 draw as Estoril Praia hosted FC Arouca.
Arouca arrived with an opportunity to strengthen their impressive early position, while Estoril were searching for a result capable of changing the direction of their opening weeks.
Neither found a breakthrough.
The point nevertheless moved Arouca to 10 points from five matches, keeping them firmly inside the leading group.
The Early Title Picture Takes Shape
Five matchdays are not enough to define a championship, but they are enough to reveal patterns.
FC Porto have established the clearest one.
With five victories from five, Porto have 15 points and remain the standard everyone else is chasing. Behind them, Benfica and Sporting are both on 13 points following Benfica’s subsequent rearranged victory over Moreirense, with Benfica holding the stronger goal difference.
Santa Clara sit on 11 points after an unbeaten start, while Arouca have accumulated 10.
There is an important caveat: the number of games played is still uneven because outstanding and rearranged fixtures remain on the calendar, particularly involving Braga.
But Porto have already achieved the one thing their rivals cannot match retroactively: perfection through the opening five rounds.

The season is still young, but the margins at the top are already becoming important.
