LONDON — British counterterrorism police investigating a major security incident near RAF Fairford have arrested a British Iranian dual national as authorities examine several possible explanations, including whether a foreign state may have been involved.

The 27 year old man was arrested in London on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts, according to British counterterrorism police.

A second British man, aged 26, was questioned under caution, while officers conducted searches at two properties as part of the expanding investigation.

The latest arrest represents a significant development in a case that has triggered a substantial security response in Britain and attracted attention from the United States and Iran.

RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire, has been used by American bombers conducting missions against Iran during the current conflict.

Five men previously arrested near RAF Fairford

The investigation began after five British men in their twenties were arrested on Sunday near RAF Fairford on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offences.

Their presence near the air base triggered a large police operation.

Authorities said officers responded during the early hours following what police described as a range of information concerning the men and their activities.

One of the alerts reportedly came from a local farmer who became suspicious after seeing the group near the military installation with three vans.

All five men were subsequently released without charge on police bail.

Their release does not mean the broader investigation has ended.

Petrol discovered but no explosive device found

Detectives confirmed that petrol was discovered inside vans associated with the men.

However, investigators found no improvised explosive device.

That distinction has become important as authorities attempt to establish precisely what happened and whether there was an intention to attack the air base.

The circumstances remain unusual.

According to media reports, one of the men detained during the original operation had himself contacted emergency services shortly before police arrested the group.

Authorities have not publicly provided a complete explanation for the men’s presence near RAF Fairford or the significance of the petrol discovered in their vehicles.

Counterterrorism investigation described as “hugely complex”

Britain’s Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, Vicki Evans, said specialist teams are pursuing multiple lines of investigation.

“The investigation into circumstances surrounding events in Gloucestershire is hugely complex, and our specialist teams are interrogating multiple lines of enquiry,” Evans said.

She confirmed that possible foreign state involvement remains among the scenarios being examined.

“As we’ve made clear, we’re looking at all possible angles, including possible foreign state involvement.”

Authorities have not publicly concluded that Iran or any other government directed the suspected activity.

Possible Iranian connection under investigation

The possibility of Iranian involvement has become one of the most politically sensitive aspects of the case.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Wednesday that there were indications the incident could have an Iranian connection.

Iran has rejected allegations that it was involved.

Tehran described accusations linking it to the RAF Fairford incident as baseless and summoned the British ambassador in response.

The arrest of a British Iranian dual national adds another element to the investigation, but nationality alone does not establish involvement by the Iranian state.

British counterterrorism authorities have said they continue to examine all possible explanations.

RAF Fairford has strategic importance for US operations

RAF Fairford occupies a particularly sensitive position because of its role in American military operations.

The Gloucestershire base hosts deployments by the United States Air Force and has been used by American bombers during operations against Iran in recent months.

Any suspected security threat involving the installation therefore has implications extending beyond British national security.

Britain has been coordinating closely with the United States as investigators attempt to establish whether the incident represented a genuine attempt to damage the base.

The possibility of foreign state involvement would considerably increase the significance of the case.

Trump questions decision to release original suspects

US President Donald Trump has publicly questioned the decision to release the five men initially detained.

Trump said he would not have released them and previously claimed that those involved had intended to cause “big damage.”

The five were nevertheless released without charge under conditions imposed by British police.

Their legal status remains governed by the British investigation, and authorities have not announced charges against them.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also suggested that a foreign actor could have been connected to the incident.

Neither Trump’s comments nor Rubio’s remarks establish responsibility, which remains a matter for the ongoing investigation.

Britain and Iran already facing heightened tensions

The Fairford investigation comes during an exceptionally difficult period in relations between Britain and Iran.

The wider conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel has created additional security concerns across Europe and the Middle East.

Military installations connected with American operations have consequently assumed greater strategic importance.

For British security services, the investigation therefore involves determining not only whether individuals were preparing an attack but also whether any suspected activity was directed, encouraged or supported from abroad.

That distinction would significantly affect how Britain responds.

Dual national arrested as investigation expands

The arrest in London suggests that investigators are continuing to develop new lines of inquiry rather than treating the release of the original five suspects as the conclusion of the case.

Searches at two properties could provide investigators with additional material, including communications, financial records or electronic devices relevant to determining what occurred.

Police have not disclosed what, if anything, was recovered during those searches.

The second British man questioned under caution has not been described as being under arrest in the information provided.

Foreign state involvement remains unproven

Despite political speculation surrounding Iran, British police have stopped short of publicly attributing the incident to Tehran.

Investigators are examining the possibility of foreign state involvement alongside other explanations.

Iran has categorically rejected accusations against it.

The case therefore remains an active counterterrorism investigation in which several fundamental questions are unresolved.

Authorities must determine why the original group was near RAF Fairford, why petrol was being carried in their vehicles, whether there was any plan to damage the base and what connection, if any, exists between those men and the British Iranian dual national arrested in London.

They must also establish whether the incident was independently organised or connected to a wider network.

Until those questions are answered, the Fairford incident remains both a major counterterrorism investigation and a potentially significant test for relations between Britain, the United States and Iran.
