Behind the Name Change: Why RB is Becoming Racing Bulls for 2025

The Formula 1 grid is no stranger to identity shifts, but the transition of the Red Bull sister team from “RB” to the full “Racing Bulls” for the 2025 season is a particularly interesting case of corporate identity finding its footing. The team, known in 2024 as Visa Cash App RB, is tweaking its identity again, embracing a moniker that was shelved just a year prior.

From RB to Racing Bulls: Correcting the Course

When the team rebranded at the start of the 2024 season, the initial proposal was “Racing Bulls.” This idea was ultimately abandoned due to concerns that the full title, “Visa Cash App Racing Bulls Formula 1 Team”, was too cumbersome. The abbreviation “RB” was adopted instead.

However, the “RB” tag never truly resonated with fans or media throughout the 2024 campaign. This disconnect led the team to conclude that its original idea was, in fact, the best fit. The full “Racing Bulls” designation makes pragmatic sense: the official company name is ‘Racing Bulls S.p.A.’, and much of the internal corporate communication already uses this name.

Team CEO Peter Bayer confirmed the shift to ServusTV, emphasizing that the change is more about clarification than a dramatic overhaul. “Now we’re making it official: RB means Racing Bulls,” Bayer stated, clarifying the ambiguity that surrounded the abbreviation throughout the year.

The Nuance of Nomenclature: Chassis vs. Car

While the team’s official entry name is changing, the core branding elements and logo are expected to remain virtually identical, reflecting the fact that the Visa Cash App branding works successfully from a corporate perspective.

Crucially, the change brings up a nuance in the FIA’s Sporting Regulations (Article 8.2), which differentiates between the chassis name and the car’s official designation.

  1. Chassis Name: This is the base designation used in the official FIA entry list. While Mercedes uses ‘Mercedes’ and Ferrari uses ‘Ferrari’, the team formerly known as RB will now formally list its chassis as ‘Racing Bulls’.
  2. Car Name: This is the designation the team uses for its specific annual challenger. The 2024 car was the VCARB01. For 2025, it is understood that the new car will be named the VCARB02.

The formal transition to “Racing Bulls” on the entry list is expected to be confirmed when the FIA publishes its final entry list for the upcoming season, officially concluding the short-lived “RB” experiment and fully embracing the corporate identity behind the team.
