The 2025 Formula 1 season will be remembered not only for the action on track but for the seismic shifts in the driver market that completely reshaped the grid. Several high-profile moves, led by a blockbuster transfer, fundamentally altered the competitive landscape of the sport.

The Hamilton-Sainz Swap
The biggest shockwave in the driver market was the departure of Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes after twelve record-breaking seasons. Hamilton broke his streak of the most consecutive seasons with a single constructor to join Ferrari, also marking his first season without a Mercedes power unit.
Hamilton’s arrival in Maranello displaced Carlos Sainz Jr. Sainz, after four seasons with the Scuderia, secured a multi-year deal with Williams, a move that positioned him as the clear team leader at Grove. Sainz technically replaced Franco Colapinto, who had himself taken the seat from Logan Sargeant midway through the 2024 season but then left Williams to join Alpine as a reserve driver in early 2025.
Filling the legendary shoes of Hamilton at Mercedes is team junior Kimi Antonelli, who was promoted directly from Formula 2, underscoring the team’s confidence in the young Italian talent.
Haas’s Total Overhaul and Alpine’s New Faces
The Haas F1 Team underwent a total overhaul, fielding an all-new line-up for 2025:
- Nico Hülkenberg departed Haas after two seasons to rejoin Sauber, the team he last competed with in 2013, providing crucial experience ahead of the team’s transition to Audi in 2026.
- Hülkenberg was replaced by Haas reserve driver Oliver Bearman, who stepped up from Formula 2. Bearman had already gained F1 experience deputizing for Ferrari in the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and for Haas in the 2024 Azerbaijan and São Paulo Grands Prix.
- Kevin Magnussen also departed Haas after a total of seven seasons across two stints. He was replaced by Esteban Ocon, who split with Alpine before the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Ocon’s vacant seat at Alpine was secured by Jack Doohan, who had previously replaced Ocon for the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, marking the young Australian’s first full-time F1 seat.
The Red Bull Family and Sauber’s Fresh Start
Change also swept through the Red Bull camp:
- Despite a contract extension until 2026, Sergio Pérez parted ways with Red Bull Racing after the 2024 season. He was replaced by Liam Lawson, who earned his promotion from Racing Bulls after impressive stints in 2023 and 2024.
- Lawson’s place at Racing Bulls was filled by Red Bull Racing reserve and 2024 Formula 2 runner-up Isack Hadjar.
Meanwhile, Sauber saw both Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu leave after three years. Bottas rejoined Mercedes as a reserve driver (a team he raced for from 2017 to 2021), while Zhou joined Ferrari in a reserve role. The seat alongside the new arrival Nico Hülkenberg, was taken by reigning Formula 2 Champion Gabriel Bortoleto.
The 2025 season promises an electrifying narrative with so many drivers in new machinery and new environments, resetting the dynamic across the entire Formula 1 paddock.
